Martin Hobbs


Martin has over 30 years experience in the construction industry working for seven years in the private sector for a chartered quantity surveying practice producing bills of quantities for tendering, cost planning and final account management for clients.

Twelve years working for a contractor which was a specialist cladding and concrete repair contractor working in the company as it grew into a FTSE250 company and one of the largest social housing contractors. During the twelve years his role developed from Estimator/Surveyor for specialist trades initially through to the Regional Managing Estimator sitting on the Western Region Board having decisions on the structure of the business. Other roles were spent initiating the ISO9001 Quality Assurance into the business and being the regional co-ordinator and also Process Mapping the Surveyor process of the business. During his time he was dealing with Sub-Contractors, Specialist Material Suppliers and Clients working on traditional building contracts and also partnering contracts.

Since Austin and Hobbs Ltd was formed he has been involved in lots of differing types of projects ranging from:

Rob Austin

Rob has over 20 years commercial experience in the construction industry. He qualified from Southbank University as a Quantity Surveyor with a 2:1 Honours degree in 1996 and worked as a Senior QS, Managing QS, Commercial Manager and Head of Financial Business Systems, for regional and FTSE 250 companies, managing a number of teams and delivering success and benefit in all areas including e-commerce, CVR development, group reporting as well as commercial functions including contract disputes resolution, monthly finance management and auditing.

Other skill areas included business analysis and project management to business transformation management and customer liaison.
 He worked for 10 years in a commercial capacity included the role as a Head of Finance Business Systems. During this time I have managed a team of people to develop, run and maintain finance systems across a 750m turnover national company. The work streams include reactive and planned works throughout the environmental, social housing and compliance sectors.
 His niche skills include Coins, an ERP system specifically designed for the construction industry, which I have 10 years experience. He delivered a number of key projects including the design, development and implementation of CVRs, budgets and forecasting, purchase card implementation, moving large supply chains to e-commerce – e.g. trading over 30,000 invoices a month via electronic trading for the top 30 suppliers, job costing, multi million pound company acquisitions, company restructures and Management Information requirements.

He managed the gap between the business and the IT functions and to manage both business expectations and SLA’s and the complexities faced with IT interfacing and hosting of environments. He worked with the department heads to identify development and improvement processes and managed this through specification, design, UAT and deployment.
